“This definitely puts a smile on my face” -Thanos

As someone who is completely obsessed with superheroes and comic books, I have been a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since I first saw Thor (2010). Since then, I have developed an unhealthy obsession with watching all of the films, learning useless information about the production of the films and how scenes were shot, and overall, I love these movies. With the promise of Infinity War being the first time in the MCU that every single superhero will be all together on the screen at one time, I was very hopeful that Infinity War would be the best movie of all time…. That all changed as soon as the movie credits came to an end on my first viewing….

PLOT:

There is way too much to talk about in terms of the plot, so here is a brief summary of the film. This film follows an alien warrior named Thanos, whose sole purpose is to collect all 6 Infinity Stones (subtle plot points in most MCU film that each have immense power) and use the power of them in order to eradicate half of the life in the universe. With heroes from all over the universe realizing this mad titan’s plan, they try to protect the stones from Thanos’ evil grasps. Will “all” of the heroes be able to stop him, or will they be subjected to eradication, along with half of the life in the universe.

WHAT DOES IT DO?:
I had so many high hopes for this movie, but I left the first viewing with a very salty taste in my mouth from what the movie did. First off, I was lied to about all of the heroes being together in the same place on the screen. Not only did this never happen, but some heroes were left out of this movie. Not only were the heroes from the Netflix series left out, but Hawkeye and Ant-Man didn’t make the cut. I know Hawkeye isn’t really beneficial in terms of all the superheroes in the Avengers, but he was one of the main six in the original, at least put him in the movie to show his character some respect. Ant-Man wasn’t in the film because the actors were filming “Ant-Man and the Wasp” around the same time as Infinity War. This is okay, but when you make the promise of all the heroes together, at least tell the truth instead of getting all of the fans hopes up.

Not only that, but none of the Avengers get more than 12 minutes of screen time. You remember the amazing Black Panther character from his own film (2018)? He only has 8 total minutes… This film chose to focus more on Thanos and make him appear to be a hero in his own right through his motivations. He actually has a legit reason to his motivations which was perfectly fine, however, when you have 19 films to at least cover more about this villain, and wait until this film to focus just on him, I feel disappointed. He wasn’t a bad villain, but he has 50 minutes of screen time to himself. I came to this movie wanting to see Captain America, Iron Man, and many other heroes, not some Homer Simpson looking villain who is obsessed with bedazzled gloves. Marvel should have focused more on the heroes rather than making the villain look like a hero.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
As you may have noticed that I said that I felt bad about this movie after my “first” viewing of it. I ended up seeing this film about 5 times. The odd part about this, I only paid for my ticket the first viewing. So many people wanted me to see it with them, and those times they paid for my tickets, so I’m not going to say no to a free movie with friends and loved ones. As a fan, this movie felt so discouraging to be a Marvel fan. I love the Avengers’ scenes in the movie, which were the saving graces to this film. However, the lies

CONCLUSION:

Overall, Infinity War doesn’t feel like an Avengers’ movie. Captain America: Civil War (2016) felt more like an Avengers movie than this one did, and that movie didn’t have all of the heroes in it either. This film isn’t a bad movie, but it definitely isn’t a good Marvel movie. The first thought in my head after walking out of the theater was “This was basically Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 instead of an Avengers movie.” This was a disappointment to me, and the only hope I have that the next Avenger’s film is amazing is due to the fact all of the heroes will be in it, and they actually “avenge” themselves from Infinity War.

RATING:
2.5/5 POPCORN KERNELS

(This review was more difficult to do than the Fantastic 4 review… I need to watch better Marvel movies to get the terrible taste out of my mouth from this…)
