MPAA: PG-13

Family Friendly: Yes

When astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is accidentally left on mars, he must survive at all costs until his crew comes back for him. Will he survive, or become the first and last Martian? Although this movie was marketed to be a drama, it was surprisingly very comedic throughout the whole entire film. Instead of succumbing to the insanity of being isolated with limited resources to survive, Watney does his best to keep positive about the whole situation. Matt Damon’s performance as the isolated astronaut is what makes this movie work. Through his determination to survive, he gets the audience invested in wanting to bring him back to Earth. He makes the most out of terrible situations and that is what keeps him going. Whether he is listening to music left behind, or making jokes about things that set him back, you can see how Matt Damon is frustrated but instead vents it through joking rather than giving up. On top of the comedic scenes with Watney, the film also shows the suspense of NASA employees finding out that he is still alive, and getting the whole world to collaborate together on how to get him back alive. In these scenes, I was literally on the edge of my seat hoping that the attempts to save him would work. This is how invested the audience is when watching this movie. Overall, The Martian is a movie that is a story about survival, and how to do it botany style…. on a planet with no life.
