“When I look around, you know what I see? Losers… I mean like, folks who have lost stuff. And we have, man, we have, all of us. Homes, and our families, normal lives. And you think life takes more than it gives, but not today. Today it’s giving us something. It is giving us a chance.” -Star-Lord
“To do what?” -Rocket Racoon
“To give a shit. And I am not gonna stand by and watch as billions of lives are being wiped out.” -Star-Lord
Besides Iron-Man, this film was Marvel’s riskiest film to adapt into a movie. The reason why is because, in the comics world, the Guardians of the Galaxy were barely known among readers. Thanks to this movie, the Guardians are now a household name and icon for one of the most popular superhero franchises. This movie follows a band of misfits brought together by a Power Stone, and they have to decide what to do with it. With the whole galaxy after that stone, will our heroes be able to rise above their pasts and become more? Or will they stab each other in the back to make a profit? Director James Gunn made a masterpiece out of this film. Instead of shying away from the weirdness of the comics, he embraced what the Guardians really were. Not only that, but he used his own struggles in real life to give the characters something to their past. One thing that audiences can take away from this film is how relatable each of the Guardians is. Everyone in life has their struggles and a past he or she wish he or she could forget. This film shows them that it takes courage and a support group to help become something greater than what we originally had thought of ourselves, and that is what James Gunn put into these movies, heart. Also, he made a talking raccoon and tree main characters who stole the show every scene they are in. Chris Pratt plays the lovable Star-Lord, a man who is trying to run from his past while finding out who he is. His development in the movie was believable because he had lost so much in his life, and instead of submitting to no hope, he decides “to give a crap” once in his life. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a feel-good film that embraces its characters to become better, something that we all can relate to.
